She forces him to face the reality of what he is doing. This completely ruins the meetings for him, he can no longer cry so he has trouble sleeping once again. He notices she goes to all the same meetings as him and feels that her lie reveals his own lie. That is until he spots another faker, Marla Singer. The narrator gets a sense of release and control over his life from attending the meetings and starts to sleep peacefully. He gives fake names and engages with the real victims as if he’s one of them. This point seems to be where the narrator’s dissociative characteristics begin to show. The narrator quickly becomes addicted to attending support groups for diseases he doesn’t have. When the narrator attempts to tell the doctor how much pain he is in, the doctor tells him to attend a meeting for cancer patients if he wants to see what real pain is. The narrator suffers from insomnia and to complicate matters, when he goes to the doctor for assistance, instead of medicating or helping him, he belittles his situation. Despite the outward appearance that he is doing fairly well, he expresses frustration with his life. His job allows him to support himself, he has his own apartment filled with Ikea furniture that he’s painstakingly picked out. However, it also requires him to spend a lot of time in an office. He has a job as a recall specialist that sometimes requires him to travel and write up reports about gruesome car accidents. I believe he remains nameless in order to convey his disassociation from his core identity to the audience. The namelessness of the narrator is intentional and deliberate. The plot follows our narrator, who remains nameless throughout the entire movie. I will also apply the three social factors of work, gender and social integration in order to provide a thorough sociological analysis of the film. Throughout this reflection, I will summarize the film as well as explain certain elements with structural strain theory. Originally a book written by Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club was adapted into a movie in 1999. In order to write this paper, I must break the first two rules of Fight Club by talking about it.
